Who is Aaron Y. Honig?

I was born April 1, 1974 in Buffalo, New York. My family moved to Las Vegas in November of 1978. I came from a middle class family where both my wonderful and hardworking parents worked full-time to keep a roof over my head and raise me. I went to Tomiyasu Elementary School, Cannon Jr. High and graduated from Chaparral High School in 1992. While at Cannon Jr. High, I earned an Outstanding Citizen Award for having all E's in Citizenship the whole year. While at Chaparral, I graduated with Honors and a Distinguished Scholars Diploma. I was Captain of the Chess Team and earned my Varsity Letter. I lead my team to back to back zone Clark County School District championships. This feat was never accomplished before at that time. I was a member of numerous clubs such as Varsity Quiz, the Astronomy Club, Spanish Club and the National Honor Society. I was also Computer Science Student of the Month for May 1991.

While at UNLV, I was Assistant Director of the CSUN Election Board and a finalist for the Student Ambassador Program. I worked my way through school and after graduating UNLV, I worked in the casino industry, insurance industry, and the shipping industry. The best job that I have ever had is my current teaching position. I have been teaching for four years at the elementary level. My students are everything to me and they are the real inspiration for my aspirations to become governor. We teach our students everyday that they can do whatever they put their minds to and that this is America where anything is possible. What better example to give to our future leaders and caretakers of Nevada than to show them that this is possible.

I have taught second, fourth, and fifth grades.  Currently, I am teaching first grade. I received a Perfect Attendance award my second year teaching. I have lived in Nevada over 30 years and remember when Nevada, specifically Las Vegas, was known for education and a nice place to settle down and raise a family. Also, I know what it is like to work extremely hard everyday and struggle to earn a decent wage. My junior high school, Cannon, and high school, Chaparral, were some of the best in the nation. I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching in August of 2008 from Sierra Nevada College. In addition, I have earned three Bachelor of Arts degrees from UNLV (1993-1997) that were in the fields of History, Political Science, and Criminal Justice. While attending UNLV, I made the Dean's List my last semester and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta International History Honor Society and Pi Sigma Alpha The National Honor Society in Political Science.

I enjoy traveling with my wonderful wife, Heather, who is also a teacher and has a Master's Degree too. Sometimes we travel with our pets Skipper Normandy, Peppe Max and Spidey. Skipper is our 6 year old Bichon Frise, Spidey is our seven year old Russian Blue cat who was a stray stuck in a tree rescued by my wife, and Peppe Max is our newest edition to our family. He was a sickly, extremely emaciated Chihuahua puppy living on the streets of Vegas that we took in and made a member of our family. Peppe Max is now extremely happy and healthy.
